Si abri los ojos para ver el rostro puro y terrible de mi patria, si abri los labios hasta desgarrarmelos, me queda la palabra ....

Welcome to our site: “Exile: 30 years later…”

This is a community project that will commemorate, through a series of cultural activities, the arrival of Chilean political refugees to northern California in the middle of 1976. As a result of the 1973 coup d' etat in Chile and its subsequent political upheaval and repression, the U.S. congress joined a significant number of European nations and approved a plan to bring to the U.S. around 300 chilean families, all victims of political violence and repression. A significant number of them settled in San Jose, Stockton, Berkeley, San Francisco and other cities around the greater Bay Area.

Our project, "Exile: 30 years later.." plans to conmemorate the beginnings of our community and atthe same time honor and distinguish individuals and organizations that actively demonstrated their solidarity with Chile.

The cultural activities programmed for this project intend to construct our own memory as a community developed outside Chile, and most importantly we aim at strenghthening the nexus of the younger chilean generation with ther community in California and Chile.
